Me, Myself and I... an Introduction to Who I Am: Week 1

Hello,

My name is Christian Allen. I am a Senior at OU majoring in Anthropology and minoring in International Studies. I am specifically interested in Archaeology, (One of the four subfields of Anthropology), of the Pacific NW. I found my passion for Archaeology after taking some anthropology classes on campus. If you haven’t yet taken an Anthropology class I highly recommend it!

I was born in Joplin, MO, but have moved around a lot as a child. Interestingly the hospital I was born in is no longer standing, due to the Joplin tornado of 2011 (It doesn't seem that long ago!) I graduate high school from Broken Arrow High in OK and now live in Norman. I have also lived in Kansas and Arkansas.

I am currently employed at the Oklahoma Archaeological Survey, where I analyze archaeological material from different sites in Oklahoma, and the Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art, where I am an administrative assistant for the staff and employees at the museum.

Do NOT be alarmed if you see two of me walking around campus. I have a twin brother who recently transferred here to the University of Oklahoma from OSU. He is studying Public Affairs and Administration and is working on a career in Emergency Management.

I live with my boyfriend or two years, he's also a student at OU, and we have one dog. He is an English Bulldog named Sargent, or Sarge for short. Below is a picture of him from this morning as he lazily refused to get out of bed. His favorite pass times include playing in kiddy pools, placing your hand in his mouth, and sleeping... a lot. He loves going on long walks and meeting new dogs. He hopes to one day bring about world peace, but for now he is content with his life in Norman.

  1. What a fabulous pair of jobs, Christian! The Survey is an amazing place (I did some work with them years and years ago when I first came to OU), and I bet the FJJMA is a fun place to work. I really like their Twitter feed! I put one of their sculptures in a Known post for class just the other day:
    Sacrifice of Isaac at FJJMA
You can let me known about Museum events that I can share in the announcements, and anything you hear about going on through the Survey too — they also have a good Twitter presence, which is nice... and so does Sam Noble Museum: I am really lucky with all the OU programs that are using Twitter now!
And your Sarge looks like a real character. With his own kiddy pool: ha!!! At the end of the Mahabharata, you will see that there is a REALLY important dog character in that epic. :-)

  2. Hi Christian! That's awesome that you are pursuing Anthropology! I am an International Studies major, but have taken a few anthropology courses in the past and I really enjoyed them. I think the Pacific NW will be a great place to work, I have always wanted to go up there. Also, Sargent looks like an awesome dog! I am a huge dog lover and am planning on getting a dog of my own as soon as I graduate.

  4. Well, hello sir! Nice to see you again, and yes, I am glad we ended up with another class together ... 4 in a row streak LOL I love how you suggested that other students take an anthropology class. They are definitely interesting for sure :D

I loved the pictures of Sarge, he is too adorbs!!!!

I finally saw your brother last Tuesday. I guess he has a class right after me in Sarkeys. I walked by him and was like, that looks like Christian, but not Christian, that must be his brother, so I stopped and asked him :)

  5. Hey Christian, It sounds like you have a busy life. You are on the home stretch though. Sargent sounds like a sweet dog. I hope he can accomplish his goal of world peace. I also have a twin but we are not identical so do not worry. He is also taking the class. Your job at the Oklahoma Archaeological Survey sound tedious but fun. I hope that you make an important discovery someday.

  6. Hi, Christian!

I’ve always wanted to take an anthropology course at OU, so thank you for providing the encouragement to do so! ☺ I love that you’re tying in international studies with your degree. I’m sure that makes for fascinating reading!

I have to say, I’m very jealous of your cute little family! Your dog is precious. I once had a duck that had her own kiddie pool as well. They probably would’ve made great friends! ☺

  7. Christian, I am so jealous of your dog! My boyfriend and I have been saving up for an English bulldog, but we’re both in rental properties where the landlord doesn’t allow pets! Hopefully some day! I think anthropology would be so interesting. One of my best friends is double majoring in anthropology and geology… she loves it! I look forward to seeing some more of your writing over the course of the semester. Good luck in your senior year!

  8. Hello Christian,

I am also interested in the Archaeology. In my home county China, there is a lot of history need to be dug out. The imperial’s tombs are very hard to find. Most of them are hidden in mountains. Nobody could tell the locations because all workers and craftsmen are all buried within the tombs. Also those tombs usually have the self-destruction functions; careless grave robbers can get nothing evening dying for careless.

  9. First off, I love the pictures of your dog! He is adorable. I used to not be an animal person but my kids really wanted a dog so now I have one and I have to admit that I have become more of an animal person. I have never taken an archaeology course and I will be graduating soon so I won't be able to. I think that would have been an interesting course to take though. Well, good luck with the semester!

  10. I recently changed my major to anthropology because of an archaeology course I took and absolutely love it. Also like you, I really want to go to graduate school for archaeology because it is such an interesting field!

On another note, your dog is adorable! Dogs make everything awesome, and he looks like a great one! Good luck with your senior year and your graduate school after that! If you love the subject that much, I'm sure you'll do great!

  11. So, being in engineering, what I'm doing is pretty far off from anthropology, but I did take an anthropology course my freshman year as a gen ed, and truly loved it! Funnily enough I go to the same yoga class now that my anthropology professor I had then goes too. Small world! I'm a little jealous of your living situation- my boyfriend and I are long distance, and I was looking at animal shelter websites just last week for a four legged friend... Someday! Cheers indeed, and good luck to you!

  12. Hi Christian! Like you said in your comment on my blog, our majors are pretty closely related, and I've been in more than a few Anthro classes. While I'm definitely more oriented towards linguistics and languages, the other branches of Anthro are very interesting. Unfortunately, Archaeology is probably the one I have the least experience in. I hope you're enjoying this class, and I hope it's giving you an insight into the cultures/peoples of India!

  13. Hi Christian! Oh my gosh Sarge’s cuteness made my eyes melt! He must be such a joy to you and your boyfriend. I bet archaeology is a really exciting major to study in Oklahoma. I hear news stories, here and there, about finding of new digging sites that crop up, especially in the panhandle area. I hope you continue to enjoy your studies and keep us updated with pictures of Sarge!

  14. Christian,
Your dog is adorable! I also think that your jobs sound very interesting! It would be cool if you included something about your jobs in the weekly review for extra credit! Just a thought! :)

  15. Hello, I saw you on google plus interacting with the course early! I'm glad I finally found/got paired with you on the commenting. I'm excited to read your stories. I so want to hear stories from discoveries you have been a part of. That sounds so interesting. What is a dream job of yours? Is there a certain part of the world you would like to live in?

  16. I love bulldogs, so I am very jealous you have one! That must be so fun to be able to have a dog with you while you're in school. I always wished I would have lived somewhere with a big yard in Norman so I could get a dog! I pass through Joplin every time I drive home to Tulsa from Kansas City, so I'm familiar with the area. I can remember going to see the horrible damage that tornado had done a few years ago, I can't believe it's been that long. So sad that the hospital you were born in was destroyed!

  17. Hey Christian! Nice to meet you!
I'm really jealous of your major in Anthropology, if I had the time left I would have finished my minor in Anthropology but unfortunately I don't have the time and I don't live close enough to school. Your dog is really cute, my parents have one that's about three times his size named Maximus Arelius (Momo for short). Love all the pictures!!
